1 minute with our Everyday Girl: Teacher Fidzah

1 minute with our Everyday Girl: Teacher Fidzah
Tell me about yourself. What do you do?
My name's Nur Fidzah Mohd Nordin. I'm 45 years old and I've been a teacher for 21 years.
How are you feeling right now?
Happy :-)
You are a mum of 4 boys. What's that like?
It requires A LOT of planning. It's very tiring.
Tell me about your pick-me-up routine.
Usually it involves friends and coffee.
Is there something people wouldn't really know about you?
I've always wanted to write!
What would you write about?
About life in general. Life experiences.
Do you have a hidden talent or a secret passion?
I think I wish I could be more involved in theater, the arts. That's like a secret passion of mine.
You've mentioned you've been an educator for 20 years. What motivates you everyday to do what you do?
Some people may think teaching could be boring. But I think every year or even every day you meet different kids with different personalities and that's very interesting.
You're known to be the teacher that creates a safe space for their students. How important is it to have a strong and long-lasting student-teacher relationship?
Very important - because when students truly trust you, you can teach them with ease and you can tell them how to experience life. I think teaching is not just about lessons you'd learn in school. It's also about life. I have a lot of students close to me because of that.
If you could have lunch with one of your student, who would it be and why?
I can't pick! There's so many! Whimsigirl ladies, I'd like to have lunch with you all. Most of your were my students.
What's the funniest memory that you have of your students?
There's one time that I jumped on a table. It wasn't funny for me, but probably was for the students. Should I tell about that? I've given my class some work and they were all busy writing. And suddenly, this thing - ran into the classroom and it looked like a rat. So when I saw it, it was an instinctive reation to jump on the table - I was very young then - so I jumped and everybody was looking at me like "Teacher kenapa atas meja?" (laughs) And everybody saw it was just a squirrel, and saw me as a wimp.
Top 3 things your students has taught you about life.
Not to judge people. I've learned never to judge people because everybody has a backstory. You need to learn and understand their backstory before you say something.
Give one piece of advice for your students.
Never give up. No matter what happens, don't give up. If you're going through some really bad times, never give up.
Words that you live by with?
Be grateful.
What are you grateful for?
For people around me. I've so many people that are so nice and I'm grateful for them.
What is a simple thing you can't live without?
My phone :-( Seriously.
How would you describe your personal style?
I'm not sure if it's a style but I'd wear anything that's comfortable. Comfort first.
What's your favourite item from the MEKAR collection? Why?
There's so many! I do like the eyelet kebaya tops because I have a thing for eyelet. I really like eyelet material.
