Behind The Name: Sabrina

Behind The Name: Sabrina

“Everyday girls, you should just be yourself!”
Meet the Sabrina behind "Sabrina". Read on to get to know Sabrina better and how she inspired one of our Eid Girl.

Hi. Can you share a little bit about yourself?
Hi. My name is Sabrina Sabri. I am 36-years-old. I am currently pursuing my MBA in Energy Management. I’ve been working for many many years. I decided to stop working for a bit to pursue my masters. At the same time, I’m doing an attachment with an oil and gas company just to understand the industry a little bit more better and to also support my studies.

I have a little daughter who is 4 and a half years old. She is very cheeky. She has curly hair like me. My hobby would be rock climbing. I bring my little daughter together with my husband. We usually do indoor rock climbing. There’s one at One Utama. Otherwise when the weather is good or when we have more time, we’ll be at Batu Caves.

How would your best friend describe you in 3 words?
My best friend’s name is Tengku Zety. She loves Whimsigirl as well. She has to because she is my best friend. Hehehe. First one is a dessert lover. I eat dessert 365 days in a year. If I go for a meal, I will check out the dessert menu first. I don’t mind skipping meals just so I can have my dessert. Secondly shopaholic. I buy a lot of Whimsigirl but now that I am a student again I can’t buy as much. Third one would be that she is no longer my best friend because once I had my daughter, my daughter is my best friend and she has to compete with my daughter now. Hahahaha.

What does confidence mean to you?
For a long while I’m someone who was afraid of taking risks. So I was doing event management for the longest time and when I hit 35 I asked myself, “Is this it? Am I going to do event management until I’m 60? Or should I go into a different career path?”.

At first there were a lot of ‘What Ifs’ like “What if I quit my job? What’s going to happen? Will I have another career?”. That sort of thing. So there were also a lot of, “How am I going to pay for my child’s kindy? Can I still shop with limited cash? Can I still eat desserts and all that? After a while, I thought to myself, “Okay you need to expand your knowledge”. I decided okaylah, just do it. Take the challenge.

So I left my job. I took the road less travelled. I decided to do an MBA in Energy Management. I was doing Event Management for oil and gas before that so Energy Management is not a brand new thing for me but it’s not something that I’ve really understood. After starting my MBA, I realised it’s actually not that bad. It’s a good break from my career.

At the age of 36 I’m currently doing an internship. I realised that age is just a number. Ya people will refer to me as the intern but at the end of the day, you want to learn. You want to get the experience and learn something new. Knowledge is great value. It’s for the future. Once you’ve got all the knowledge then you can decide what you want to do.

So confidence to me is taking up new challenges. Be a risk-taker although I wasn’t a risk-taker. I may do rock climbing, it’s very risky but when it comes to career, I wasn’t really a risk-taker. But now I know it’s not bad after all.

If you could share a message to all the everyday girls out there, what would it be?Everyday girls, you should just be yourself! If you’re a colourful person, just be you. I’m a very minimal person - black and white, polka dots - but if you’re all colourful like my daughter then you should just be you. When you’re trying too hard to be someone else, there is a lot of pressure, it’s stressful because it’s just not who you are.

And if you have passion for something then go for it! Be yourself and do whatever you want to do! Whether you want to be a fashion designer or an engineer or a writer, as long as you’re passionate about it, you’ll be successful in life!
